About the Uptown Alliance
The Uptown Alliance is open to people who live in, operate a business in, work in, or just care about Uptown. The Uptown Alliance was organized ten years ago to promote a sustainable, civil, and enjoyable environment in Uptown for residents, businesses, and visitors.
Uptowners are fortunate to live within blocks of shopping, restaurants, theater, dance, sporting events, public transportation, Seattle Center, and (of course) a good cup of coffee. Uptown is going to become even livelier in the future as our neighborhood changes. Many of those changes and challenges are anticipated in the 1999 Queen Anne Neighborhood Plan. (mandated by the 1990 State Growth Management Act.)
The Uptown Alliance founders met during the City of Seattle Neighborhood Planning processes and incorporated the Alliance as a 501 c 4 non-profit organization in 1999. One of the first actions was to reclaim the name “Uptown” that identified the historic, blue-color neighborhood that existed prior to the 1962 Seattle World’s Fair. Ten businesses use Uptown in their name. Among the accomplishments of this all-volunteer organization include: Seattle’s newest urban gathering place, Counterbalance Park: An Urban Oasis. Other accomplishments include; locating the QA/Magnolia Neighborhood Center in Uptown; “Welcome to Uptown” signs; model pedestrian amenities on First Ave West between W. Mercer and W. Republican; creation of the first Uptown neighborhood event in 2000; proposed pedestrian/bike bridge over Elliott Ave and BNSF tracks into waterfront parks for construction in 2009, and development of design guidelines for future developments in Uptown.
Uptown’s boundaries, as set by the City of Seattle, are the south (Denny Way), west (Elliott Ave), and east (Aurora Ave N), but the north line zig-zags along the foot of the south slope of Queen Anne hill.
The Alliance is open to any person 18 years of age or older. Membership is automatic after attending an Uptown Alliance meeting and adding your name to our list. The Alliance tries to approach our neighborhood’s challenges in a positive and inclusive manner—you can be part of the solution. Meetings are held on the second Thursday of each month at 7 PM in the Queen Anne/Magnolia Neighborhood Center at 160 Roy Street. (North side of Roy Street between Warren Ave N and 2nd Ave N.)
