Since
it was founded in 1999, the residents and the City credit
the Uptown Alliance with the following accomplishments:
1. Establishment of the Uptown Neighborhood
Center at 157 Roy Street. This co-location of offices
for five non-profits, two elected officials and the
City of Seattle’s Queen Anne/Magnolia Neighborhood
Service Center also offers free meeting rooms to the
community.
2. Design, construction and maintenance of
a model urban streetscape on First Ave West between
West Mercer Street and West Republican Street. This
Neighborhood Matching Fund project succeeded when the
Uptown Alliance achieved early cooperation with the
developer of the east side of First Ave West with a
mixed use building. Safeway and other retail are at
street level with residential above the retail. Property
owners on the west side contributed funds for the pedestrian-scale
street lamps, benches, vegetation in the planting strip,
and trash containers to beautify both sides of the street.
3. Financial support for the Uptown Alliance
neighborhood improvement projects with semi-annual neighborhood
rummage sale for a
neighborhood of mostly multi-family buildings where
garage/yard sales aren’t practical.
5. Create, and now support financially, our
neighborhood’s annual art festival, called the
Uptown Stroll. Five of past six years.
6. Introduction of seasonal celebrations in
the park: July 2004 to mark acquisition; July 2005 to
gather stakeholder comments and honor Uptown’s
heroes; winter festival 2005.
7. Recommendation that City of Seattle plan,
design, and build a pedestrian/bike bridge to allow
access from west side of Uptown into the Elliott Bay
waterfront parks. Our proposal calls for, at minimum,
a bridge over the BNSF rail lines at the West Thomas
Street end. We continue to urge the City to bridge Elliott
Ave West for genuine pedestrian safety.
