Helpful Hints
How to appreciate life in Uptown, according to the Uptown Alliance.
Uptown has such a diverse population. Retirees, recent graduates on their first jobs, new parents with their first child, singles, marrieds, partnered, for example. Our small, but vital neighborhood does a fair job of meeting the social, physical, and mental needs of many people.
Example: Did you know that Bay View Retirement Center, the very tall building on the west side of Queen Anne Ave just north of Roy Street, has a Fitness Center and Child Care Center that are both open to the public?
Example: Did you know that the new Counterbalance Park at Queen Anne Ave and Roy Street has graphics on the stainless steel lid to the front wall. Installed in mid-March, the history and function of a "counterbalance" transportation system is portrayed?
Example:Did you know that there are two free, city provided computers available at the Queen Anne-Magnolia Neighborhood Center at 160 Roy Street? Hours for access to the Center are posted on the door.
Example: Did you know that monthly parking can be arranged for a fee at several of the Seattle Center Parking garages, and at the Mediterranean Inn?
Example: Did you know that postering is legal in Seattle? But there are very clearly defined rules about how to attach posters to utility poles. A small group of Uptowners regularly remove posters that do not follow the City's ordinance.
Example: Do you know what AIA means in Uptown? The City along with the State Liquor Control Board now includes Uptown in an Alcohol Impact Area for retailers that sell liquor. Specific brands of alcohol are prohibited.
Example: What can residents do about graffiti? If the graffiti is on City property: parking pay stations, signs, call the Graffiti Hotline at 684-7587 and request the Graffiti Rangers to remove it. If graffiti is on private property, we suggest first asking the property owner to remove it. If no timely response, report it on the Graffiti Hotline.
Example: Where is the nearest City P Patch? Children's park?
Queen Anne P Patch is at the top of Queen Anne at Lynn and 3rd N. There's also Queen Pea Patch on 5th North and Howe Street, plus Interbay P Patch on 15th Ave West at Wheeler Street. To sign up for a P Patch call the City at 684-0264.
A lovely childrens' play area is in Ward Street Park. This park even has a small building that can be rented from the City Department of Parks and Recreation for birthday parties and picnics. Go to 4th Ave North, walk past Merrill Gardens Retirement Community, continue uphill to the park on your left.
