Counterbalance Park
Uptown Alliance helped to spearhead the purchase and construction of a municipal park at 700 Queen Anne Ave N. (northeast corner of the intersection with Roy St) to create a gathering space at this prominent and historic corner of Uptown. Named for the Counterbalance street car line, which ran up and down Queen Anne Avenue North from 1890-1940 and still sits underneath the street surface, the park was designed by landscape architect Robert Murase and artist Iole Allesandrini. The Pro Parks Levy, approved by voters in November 2000, made funds available to acquire the park site and it was purchased by the City of Seattle in 2004. Counterbalance Park: An Urban Oasis officially opened in July 2008. Uptown Alliance continues to partner with arts organizations and local businesses to host events and activities that activate the space.
