“Walk in and hang out!" These are the words of owner James Ly as he gestured to the diverse group of customers that frequent his popular corner coffee shop, Zingaro. He is proud of the business he has built over the past 20 years, and how it brings him joy every day. Zingaro is a true neighborhood hang-out where one can find regulars, art patrons, tech workers, tourists, and performers from the Rep and PNB – all who find a comfy place for coffee and a bite to eat.
From a very young age James worked at his Dad’s doughnut shop in Kirkland, gradually moving from working the counter to later taking care of the bookkeeping for his parents’ business. Because he spent so much time there as a kid, he observed firsthand the importance of building a sense of community, which resonated at his parents’ shop. He wanted to create a similar, welcoming environment for his own business. He takes delight when strangers keep running into each other at Zingaro, and then end-up becoming friends. And, although wifi is available (of course!) its not overtly highlighted, thereby creating a space where it’s easy to connect in person.
Since opening in 2005, James has sourced his beans from Lighthouse Coffee -- a local roaster on Phinney Ridge. All the sandwiches and breakfast items are made in-house and desserts are from Sweet Nothings, also located in Phinney. James’s father, though now retired, delivers his own homemade baked items every Wednesday and hangs out with some of the regulars, while his mom helps keep his stock room neat and tidy! James is committed to keeping his prices affordable – he does not have a website, and the diverse clientele find their way to Zingaro by word-of-mouth and by simply walking in.
Stop on by, and you’ll see why Zingaro has been a favorite in Uptown for 20 years! Caffe Zingaro
